Obituary of Rayford Barksdale

Please share a memory of Rayford to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mr. Rayford Leonard Barksdale, age 73, of Fort Payne passed away March 22, 2020. A Graveside service will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 from the Whiton Cemetery. Bro. Billy Helton & Bro. Junior Barksdale will be officiating. It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our beloved Dad, Ray Barksdale on March 22, 2020. He was born and raised in the Shiloh community on the forty acre farm that his father bought by sending money home to his wife during WWII. He enjoyed growing up in the quiet countryside, playing with friends and cousins, fishing and playing ball with all the kids in the community. He graduated from Fyffe High School and married his high school sweetheart, Gaynell, who was the mother of his two girls. After they married they lived in Atlanta for a brief period but the big city was no place for them. They returned to the Shiloh community where Ray lived until his passing. Ray was known far and wide for his business ventures. From running a used car business to owning a dirt race track. He was an avid softball player back in the day and always up for a good joke. His sense of humor was priceless. Ray will forever be known for his kindness, his love for his hometown Fyffe Red Devils, watching the Braves and Auburn football and for knowing everyone and everyone knowing him. Words cannot describe how much he will be missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Geneva Barksdale, his only sibling, Rita Barksdale Izell, and former spouses, Gaynell Hope Barksdale and Charlotte Barksdale. He is survived by his daughters, Holley Barksdale Swanson and Kelley Barksdale Mize, his sons-in-law, Chris Swanson and Steve Mize, his grandchildren, Casey Miller, Tyler Swanson, Garrett Mize and Justin Mize. *Per Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and ADPH, effective Thursday, March 19, 2020-all gatherings of 25 persons or more or gatherings of any size that cannot maintain a consistent six foot distance between persons, are prohibited. This order shall apply to all gatherings, events, or activities that bring 25 or more persons in a single room or single space at the same time.*
